Sports-Loving Nigerians Speak On Bolaji's Removal

Date: 2014-03-11

Last week, President Goodluck Jonathan removed the Minister of Sports, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi. He then directed one of the 11 newly sworn-in ministers, Dr. Tamuno Danagogo, to take over from Abdullahi. No reason was given for Abdullahi's sack, but to many Nigerians, it was not unconnected with the politicking in Kwara State, where Abdullahi hails from. The former Sports Minister is strongly known to be the political godson of former Kwara State governor, incumbent Senator Bukola Saraki.

Before his sack, Abdullahi had been seen as one of the nation's best performing ministers. During his tenure, Nigeria won the African Nations Cup, Under-17 FIFA World Cup and qualified for the 2014 World Cup holding mid-year in Brazil. He also initiated far-reaching developments to develop the local football league.

His removal cannot but generate heavy traffic on the social media, with many believing that it was political. There are, however, those who believe serving in any administration should be a matter of loyalty and nothing else. New Media monitored the social media flow:

Olufemi Ferrari Ajayi

Just when I thought someone with passion for sports had been given the opportunity to manage the affairs of sports in the country... another sack again!

Chamberlain Jumbo

Super Eagles performance has nothing to do with the removed minister. He wasn't the coach or a player. Kudos to Mr President, because you don't empower someone who wants to bring your government down, instead of keying into the transformation agenda.

Chukwuemeka Ogbu

The president is removing his opponents.

Oladokun Julius

That is simply what we call "realpolitik" so there is nothing bad about his action. He who owns the slave, owns the goods.

Abe Samson Dotun

By all standards, the removed minister was a performer par excellence. Political interest should not overrule performance. Anyway, the deed is done.
