'Govt Won't Burden Kwarans With Tax'
Kwara State Government has said despite dwindling allocation, the state was not considering the option of increasing tax, assuring that the administration's contract with Kwarans is not to burden them with tax.
The state's Commissioner for Finance, Nurudeen Ademola Banu, stated this against the backdrop of the state's dwindling allocation.
He said since his assumption of office, "this government has never increased tax. I mean that is the easiest thing to do. But, we have not done that and we will not do it because we don't want anything that will affect our people in any way.
"What the state has benefitted from is sound financial re-engineering from the experience of the governor despite the problem, which is why it seems we are having more than enough.
"We are only managing what we have with a sound financial re-engineering. I don't want to go further than that. Despite the problem, projects are still going on here and we are even having new projects.
"We are also engaging and employing about 5,000 citizens and people will be wondering how we are doing it, especially when you juxtapose our position in the allocation cadre to other rich states."
"Even states that are getting triple of what we are getting are having problems paying salaries. I think the opposition should be asking us how we are doing it if they cannot commend us, which I am sure, they are doing within them but they are playing politics."
