Saraki urges Jonathan to call broadbased meeting on security

Date: 2014-04-15

The Chairman of Nigeria’s Senate committee on Environment and Ecology, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has urged President Goodluck Jonathan to call an emergency meeting of leaders of political parties, opinion leaders and religious leaders to discuss the the endemic problems of insecurity in the country.

The former governor of Kwara state gave the suggestion in his reaction to the deadly twin bomb blasts at the crowded Nyanya bus station in Abuja today. Over 70 people died in the blasts and 124 were injured.

He described as baffling and heartbreaking that scores of innocent citizens have been killed and lamented that the nation was yet again faced with another great loss of innocent lives at the hands of terrorists.

In a statement he personally signed, Saraki noted that the growing insecurity which has spanned over three years unabated has continued to threaten the unity of the nation as well as weaken its socio-economic and political strength.

He said: “ It is unfortunate that in the face of this growing insurgency, the federal government has been unable to overcome the challenge and provide adequate and holistic approach to secure the lives and property of Nigerians.

“Beyond usual promises and consolations to the masses, the federal government should improvise and adopt advanced security measures and counter- terrorism strategies that can provide adequate security in the nation.

“There is an urgent need for political cooperation across the board. I call on Mr. President to call a joint meeting of leaders from all political divides, religious and opinion leaders to deliberate on the nation’s security plight.

“Enough of rhetoric and workshop or summit on security matter. What we need now is action and commitment. It is my belief that for the sake of the innocent lives our political resolve must be as strong as the military option”.

He sympathised with the families of those affected while praying Almighty Allah to comfort them.
