Generational war looms in APC

Date: 2014-05-20

Ahead of its national convention slated for the second quarter of this year, there are indications that the All Progressives Congress (APC) may contend with a generational battle within the party.

The impending battle that appears certain will likely pit the very old members against the younger generation bloc of the party, the consequence of which, if not tactically handled, could tear the party into pieces.

The bone of contention, according to Daily Sun checks, is the presidential ambition of some of the old but experienced hands in the party, which the younger party members consider to be absurd. It was gathered that some younger members of the party are already consulting and mobilising for a younger presidential candidate to be mentored and supported for the race, rather than the older ones fielding themselves for the top seat.

An insider, who confided in Daily Sun at the weekend, stressed the need for the party to get it right by taking the right step towards fielding the right candidate, stating that, "right now, Nigerians are yearning for change and the change, for now, can only come from the APC."

He said it would be suicidal politically, if the APC, which people are looking up to disappoints them.

Daily Sun gathered authoritatively that those yearning for generational change in the party look forward to having the likes of Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, former anti-corruption Czar, Malam Nuhu Ribadu and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, who is rumoured to be eying the APC to realise such an ambition.

The advocates of generational shift in the party, our correspondent gathered, have also thrown up possible running mates for whoever eventually emerges as the party's presidential hopeful.

The names going round are those of Governors Adams Oshiomhole and Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi of Edo and Rivers states, respectively.

However, even the younger generation members admit that the task before them is herculean going by the political experience, financial muscle and the electoral exposure of the likes of former Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari, former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and former Kwara State Governor, Senator Bukola Saraki among others.

But the Interim National Publicity Secretary of the party, Alhaji Lai Muhammed, told our correspondent that the party has not reached that stage. Waxing philosophical, he said,"when we get to the bridge, we will cross it."
