Press Release: Be Ready to Go to Jail over Financial Recklessness - PDP Warns KWSG

Date: 2014-05-30

The Kwara State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the Kwara State Government of recklessly funding the machinery of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the public purse, warning that should that continue, the state governor might end up in Kirikiri or Mandala maximum prisons.

The PDP, in a statement released to the media in Ilorin by its Publicity Secretary, Chief Rex Kola Olawoye, said it is alarmed by the illegal diversion of funds meant for the development of the state to party affairs by the Kwara State Government.

Please find full statement below:

We have watched bewildered how the Abdulfatah Ahmed-led Government of Kwara State has continued to dip its hands into the public tilt to fund the activities of APC in Kwara state.

Starting from the APC's membership registration which cost the Kwara people a whopping N100milion, to its recently held undemocratic congresses, which is put at over N50million, the state has never had it so bad and reckless!

But just when we thought the regime of heist and recklessness was over, the Kwara State Government has once again taken from the money belonging to all Kwarans, to sponsor over 1000 APC members to a jamboree in the name of the gubernatorial declaration of the failed 2nd term bid of the Governor of Ekiti State.

We challenge the APC to tell the world the source(s) of the money it has been using to prosecute party activities over the past few months. For examples; who paid for the multi-million Naira mansion along Peter Tokulola street, GRA, Ilorin, that the APC recently acquired as a party secretariat? From which account other than state's, is the Kwara State Government sponsoring over 50 APC state and local government executives to Umrah pilgrimages in Mecca? Who paid for the transportation of over 1000 members of the APC to Isin, Offa, Share and Omu-Aran and Kaiama where Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed has gone to commission his projects as part of an insensitive celebration of an uneventful 3rd anniversary of the APC-led government?

Is it not ironic that the Kwara APC, whose machinery is being illegally sponsored and funded from the public tilt, would have the morality to criticize the PDP, whose singular 'offence' in the estimation of the APC is that it rallied its members to donate voluntarily from their individual widow's mite to their party?

The Kwara APC should summon the courage to first cast out the large beam of wood in their own eyes before they criticize the PDP's well-meaning effort. Instead of the PDP to toe the path of dishonor and shame that the APC is doing with the collective patrimony of the Kwara people, what we have simply done was to raise funds through well-to-do members and other public spirited members of the public. The fact that Kwarans from all walks of life defiled partisanship and gathered on the Sheraton Hotels and Towers's venue of the fundraising dinner and donated generously to the cause of the Kwara PDP is enough evidence that the people have rejected the APC in Kwara state.

This is why we are not surprised that the APC is feeling scared and jittery already to the extent of seeking to acquire a fresh but unsustainable loan of N23billion from the capital market in a bid to match up to the PDP's modest war chest. But, that the Kwara State Governor, with all his pretentions to finesse and accountability, will continue to willfully dip his hands into the cookie jar, all in the name of squaring up to the PDP, is not only shameful but very condemnable. Mr. Abdulfatah Ahmed and his APC collaborators are better advised to desist forthwith from this ignoble path that leads to nowhere but Oke-Kura and Kirikiri Maximum Prisons.

Mr. Ahmed is better reminded that his constitutional immunity from criminal prosecution has an expiry date-which is in less than 10 months from now. By then, when the cookie eventually crumbles, he will be left all alone in the cold to bear the brunt of prosecution for illegal diversion of public fund to prosecute a narrow, bogus 2nd term bid.

Signed:Chief Rex Kola Olawoye
Kwara PDP Publicity Secretary
