Flood claims 4-yr-old in Kwara, 4 others in Zamfara

Date: 2014-06-02

Flood resulting from an early morning downpour in Atikeke community of Gaa-Akanbi area of Ilorin has washed away a four-year--ld baby boy.

The Nigerian Tribune gathered that the incident, which occurred around 7:30am on Sunday, caused confusion and uneasy among residents of the community.

It was also gathered that the death of the deceased, simply identified as Gideon, came barely two months after two other boys were killed in the same community when flood sneaked into their apartment while they were asleep.

Eyewitness account revealed that the incident happened when the grandmother of the victim was taking members of her family to church for early morning devotion.

It was also gathered that the boy slipped inside the river on getting to the narrow path where a steel was laid across the river for passersby while the old woman was taking four of her grandchildren to church.

"I saw them when they were coming; I was on the other side of the river.

"The old woman waited for her grandchildren to pass one by one, but the boy in front of all of them slipped off and fell inside the river.

"I think the steel laid across the river for people to pass was slippery due to the early morning rain," the eyewitness said.

It was also gathered that the old woman was seen wailing uncontrollably, asking sympathisers to help search for the boy.

"Ah, when my son slipped inside the river, he was calling my name.

"God. I'm doomed. Who do I tell this and how do I explain this to anyone my, God?

"You people should go and help me look for his dead body. My God, I'm doomed," the woman said.

Meanwhile, at least four children were killed and 200 houses were destroyed in a downpour which ravaged a suburb of Gusau metropolis of Zamfara State.
