Ahmed urges wise use of votes
Kwara State Governor Abdulfatai Ahmed has advised Nigerians to use their votes wisely to stage a peaceful political revolution in the 2015 general elections.
He was delivering a keynote address yesterday at the commemoration of the 21st anniversary of annulment of the June 12, 1993 election organised by the Lagos State Chapter of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ).
According to the Kwara governor, as the 2015 general election draws nearer, Nigerians must also prepare to demonstrate similar commitment to the one displayed in 1993 elections.
"As the nation marches into an election year in 2015, it is incumbent on every Nigerian to be on the alert about the processes that would guarantee a free and fair election and usher in a leadership that will genuinely transform the lives of our people. The June 12 political revolution is about transparency and adherence to the rule of the game. One of the greatest challenges that threaten democracy is impunity and arbitrariness. While I am not advocating violent change, I clamour for a peaceful revolution through the free and assertive expression of popular will by all Nigerians," Gov. Ahmed said.
He said a transparent election is key in every electoral process. "Only a credible and transparent electoral process built on an efficient and effective system can stabilise and sustain our democracy. While I agree that one of the ingredients of credible elections is political will on our leaders' part, the issue transcends them, leaders alone cannot do it. All Nigerians, including the political parties and security agents have vital roles in the formation of a credible electoral system," he said.
At a similar event at Chief Moshood Abiola's house in Ikeja, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Adeyemi Ikuforiji, said the experience of the 1993 presidential election has taught Nigerians a lesson.
