Saraki Congratulates Fayose, Says Ekiti Polls Should Serve As Lesson To Jonathan

Date: 2014-06-22

Former Governor of Kwara State, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has hailed Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi for toeing the “path of honour” by congratulating his opponent, Ayodele Fayose of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on his victory at the governorship elections, which held on Saturday.

Fayose polled 203, 090 votes to defeat Fayemi of the All Progressives Congress, APC, who garnered 120, 433 votes. The candidate of the Labour Party, Opeyemi Bamidele, polled a paltry 18, 135 votes to come a distant third.

Gov. Fayemi on Sunday, conceded defeat, bowing to the wishes of the people and congratulated the governor-elect, who he called his ‘brother’.

He said: “If this is, indeed, the will of the Ekiti people, I stand in deference to your will. If the result of the election is an expression of the voice of our people, we must all heed your voice.

“I have just spoken with my brother, Mr. Peter Ayodele Fayose, congratulating him on his victory. In a few hours from now, I will be meeting the governor-elect to discuss the future of our dear state and how we can work together to institute a smooth transition programme”.

Saraki, who is now the Senator representing Kwara Central, also congratulated the PDP candidate on his victory, which he attributed to his ‘doggedness and relationship to grassroot’, but warned that the Ekiti election should serve as a lesson to politicians that it is possible for an incumbent to lose an election in Nigeria.
