Super Eagles Can Surprise France - Ex-Sports Minister Abdullahi
Bolaji Abdullahi, the immediate past Minister of Sports, said on Thursday that the Super Eagles had all it takes to qualify for the quarterfinals of the ongoing FIFA World Cup.
In a statement issued by Julius Ogunro, the Special Assistant on Media to Abdullahi, he said the Eagles were capable of reaching the final.
Abdullahi was speaking in the aftermath of the round of 16 World Cup fixtures that paired Nigeria against France at the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
"I am confident that this team will pull a surprise against France and qualify for the quarterfinals for the first time.
"I commend the coaches of the team led by Stephen Keshi for a job well done.
"I also commend the NFA board, led by Aminu Maigari, for being focused and proactive," the statement quoted Abdullahi as saying.
The former minister commended the Supers Eagles for qualifying for the World Cup round of 16, noting that Argentina narrowly escaped defeat.
Abdullahi said that the team's achievement was based on hard-work, resilience and commitment.
"I am very happy with the performance of our team. They were focused, disciplined and committed.
"This was evident in the games they have played so far and it is therefore not surprising that they have broken the jinx of not winning a World Cup match since 1998.
"It is the same attitude they displayed when they won the Nations Cup last year," he added.
