British Council Introduces Audio Device for English Language Lessons
The British Council has introduced Learn English Audio Project in Nigeria (LEAPIN) to enhance the study of English Language in low resource schools.
The Council's Communications Manager Desmond Omoviein a release explained that the device that is powered by solar contains interesting songs that will aid pupils in the learning of quality English.
He said, "The MP3 audio recorder contains lower grade primary songs and stories, lesson plans and phonics which have been mapped to the Nigerian curriculum.
He explained that the pilot phase of the project was carried out in Kwara and Jigawa State in partnership with Education Sector Support Programme in Nigeria (ESSPIN), adding that the monitoring and evaluation of the project is being carried out by the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).
Omoviein added that with the support of Kwara State Universal Education Board and Jigawa State Universal Education Board 600 state school teachers have been trained on the appropriate methodology, content navigation and the technical aspect of these units.
In a testimonial, Head teacher, Kargo School, Dutse, Jigawa State, Yusuf Saidu said, "The MP3 audio players can guide the teacher if they want to teach a particular topic. The pupils are learning more because they can hear the sounds; correct pronunciations, hear the stories and the songs."
Also, Head teacher, St Andrew School, Ilorin, Kwara State, Mrs. M.A Owolabi, "The audio units can be effectively used in schools where there is no electricity as we have been taught how to charge it using the winding up instrument and the solar energy".
