You can't collect PVCs by proxy, INEC tells Kwara residents

Date: 2014-07-14

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Kwara State has told residents of the state not to expect collection of Permanent Voter's Cards (PVC) by proxy.

Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Timothy Ibitoye, who sated this, said the cards can only be collected by the individual persons whose photographs appeared on them.

Ibitoye made this known on Sunday at a sensitisation forum on the distribution of PVCs and Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) in Omu-Aran, headquarters of Irepodun Council Area of the state.

He said the temporary voter's cards used in 2011 general elections would not be accepted for the 2015 polls.

The INEC commissioner said the measures were part of INEC's commitment to conducting credible and acceptable elections next year and henceforth.

He appealed to the people of the state to make sure they collect their PVCs from August 15 to 17, 2014 when INEC would commence the distribution.

The resident commissioner said electorate could transfer their voter card from one location to a new one where they want to vote, saying anybody that leaves his former place of residence to a new one can transfer the voter card to the new place to enable him exercise his franchise.

Ibitoye explained that the card transfer would entail a written application to his office with photocopy of the voter card stating the place he or she wants to transfer the card to.

According to him, interested political parties can assign agent to monitor the distribution of PVCs as well as the registration of voters.

The electoral chief, however, said anybody caught disrupting the distribution of the PVCs, threatening people from collecting their cards or destroying INEC properties or engage in multiple registrations would be liable to prosecution.

According to him, Electoral Act of 2010 stipulates a fine of N100, 000 or two years imprisonment for anybody found guilty.

He appealed to the people to conduct themselves in orderly manner during the exercise so that they do not run foul of the law.
