75 percent of Kwara Women shun Contraceptives - Expert

Date: 2012-05-11

A family planning expert, Dr Abdulmumin Sa'ad, says more than 75 per cent of women in Kwara shun the use of modern contraceptives for family planning.

Sa'ad, an official of the Nigeria Urban Reproductive Health Initiative (NURHI), told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Ilorin that a survey conducted by the organisation revealed the non- acceptability of contraceptives.

He said that the women were worried by the fear of inability to have more children later in life, side effects, disapproval from their spouses as well as religious consideration.

Sa'ad, who is the officer in charge of monitoring and evaluation of NURHI, said that the survey covered the five local governments of Ilorin West, Ilorin East, Ilorin South, Irepodun and Offa.

"The family planning contraceptive prevalence rate in Kwara is very low, 21 per cent, compared to other parts of the country where the project is sited.

"Family planning is one of the pillars of the motherhood health initiatives and to have reduction in maternal mortality and infant mortality, we should give attention to family planning services,'' he said.

He called for concerted efforts among stakeholders as well as an awareness campaign that would encourage acceptability of contraceptives
