Rowdiness, faulty machines mar voters' registration in Ilorin
Prospective voters in Ilorin, Kwara State have expressed disappointment over the process of the Continuous Voters' (CVR) Registration exercise being conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), describing it as too slow. Cross section of voters who spoke to Daily Trust yesterday urged INEC to deploy more machines and technical staff to fast-track the exercise.
Findings by Daily Trust correspondent revealed that one machine is deployed per centre while some of the machines are faulty, but it was observed that the exercise witnessed large turnout of prospective voters in the areas visited.
Fresh registration is being conducted in 72 polling units cutting across eight local government areas including Asa, Ekiti, Ilorin East, Ilorin South, Irepodun, Isin, Moro and Oyun.
When Daily Trust visited Pake polling unit in Ilorin South Local Government in the afternoon, many prospective voters complained that they have been at the centre since morning, but they could not be registered.
"This is almost 1.pm, yet they have just registered 20 people since morning", one of the voters complained. The situation was not different at Tanke Secondary School registration point.
Speaking with Daily Trust, spokesman for INEC in the state Barrister Jacob Ayanda confirmed that some of the ad-hoc officers were finding it difficult to acclimatize with the machine, but added that the commission had deployed technical staff from the headquarters to rectify the problem.
Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ambrose Aisabo has urged INEC to deploy more machines for the exercise, saying, "You have one machine each in most of the centres and you have crowd of people and most of the machines are also faulty".
