Kwara: SURE-P coordinators raise the alarm over plan to sack 3,000

Date: 2014-09-01

Coordinators of the Petroleum Reinvestment Programme (SURE-P) in Kwara State, have raised the alarm over plot to sack 3,000 beneficiaries of the programme on alleged political reasons.

The coordinators, who addressed journalists during a press conference attended by the 3,000 beneficiaries in Ilorin ,on Sunday, accused government of plans to politicise the scheme in Kwara State.

The coordinators, who are also chieftains of All Progressives Congress (APC), alerted President Goodluck Jonathan ,on the alleged illegality being perpetrated by the state Chairman of the scheme, Mr. Moses Ibiyemi.

However, Mr Ibiyemi, has described the allegations as unfounded and handiwork of political detractors in the state.

The spokesperson of the coordinators, Alhaji Kola Yusuf, had said the chairman, implementation committee in the state (CIS) was plotting to replace names of the original beneficiaries of the programme with his party members, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

"Report reaching us as the zonal state coordinators, confirmed the plot by the chairman to change the bank account in use for the payment of Sure-P workers' salaries at Access Bank, as well as change the original names of beneficiaries from different communities in the state and replace them with his party's members' names (PDP).

"As the zonal coordinators, we always interact with our local government coordinators ,who supervise and coordinate the activities of the beneficiaries at the local government and community levels.

"It is sad to receive in their report that the chairman had threatened to sack the coordinators and supervisors, including workers that are sympathetic to their party, except they dump their membership for the sinking PDP.

Equally, the beneficiaries across the state had been making different reports to the zonal office to the effect that the state chairman had been going about claiming that whoever is not a member of the PDP would be replaced with PDP members because the scheme was designed by the party and it was meant for PDP across the country.

"The Sure-P, which was a fall out of the subsidy removal by the federal government was not designed as PDP programme or party scheme, rather it was a national programme designed for Nigerians to cushion the effects of the fuel subsidy removal, therefore no one has the right to replace any bonafide beneficiaries of the programme in the state.

"We wish to caution Mr. President and Commander-in-Chief, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan against any attempt to use the Sure-Programme as a political weapon to foist himself on the people of Nigeria. The funds accruable from the subsidy belongs to Nigerians, therefore the beneficiaries are Nigerians irrespective of their political affiliation, religious belief and or ethnic nationalities, therefore the people are entitle to their right of association either political or otherwise.
