Governor Saraki commissions newly renovated multi-million naira secretariat

Date: 2010-12-23

Kwara State Governor, Dr Bukola Saraki has charged Civil Servants in the State to reciprocate the government’s huge investments in the service by ensuring prompt and improved service delivery.

Dr Saraki gave the charge while commissioning the newly renovated Multi-million naira Secretariat Phase I which is expected to boost the morale of Civil Servants and enhance their productivity.

The renovation of the Secretariat complex which gulped over N600 million, had earlier been approved by the State Executive Council to enable the old structure get a facelift since its erection about 39 years ago.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Saraki disclosed that the idea of building a befitting Secretariat was conceived in 1971, during the administration of the first Military Governor of the State, Brigadier General David Bamigboye (rtd).

He, however, lamented the deplorable condition of the once sprawling edifice at the inception of his administration in 2003, which he blamed on lack of maintenance culture by successive administrations.

His words: "The condition in which we met the complex on assumption of office was worrisome and quite disturbing and as such, we took decisive steps to address the situation".

One of the cardinal focuses of his administration from the onset the governor noted was to reposition the Civil Service for effective service delivery which he described as the engine room for any meaningful development.

While congratulating the State Head of Service for this wonderful feat, Dr Saraki charged public office holders and the entire Civil Servants in the State to reciprocate government gesture by ensuring prompt and improved service delivery.

He also admonished them to undertake their work diligently with zeal and put all the facilities in the complex into judicious use to justify the enormous funds expended.

Saraki specifically told users of the complex to demonstrate a high sense of responsibility by imbibing good maintenance culture to elongate the life span of facilities provided, noting that gone were the days when government properties and facilities were treated with disdain.

The governor, who commended the contractors, Messrs Chavet Nigeria Limited and Ashbak Global Concepts for doing a thorough job, urged them to keep the tempo afloat.

He equally advised other contractors to emulate the touch of excellence demonstrated by Chavet and Ashbak, pointing out that only contractors who live up to the bidding would continue to receive patronage by the State Government.

Earlier, the State Head of Service, Alhaji Dabarako Mohammed had expressed appreciation on behalf of the entire workforce to the governor for the improvement and transformation which he has brought to the State through training and retraining particularly in the area of Information Communication Technology.

While assuring Dr Saraki that the renovated Secretariat would be adequately maintained, Alhaji Mohammed charged workers to improve their productivity, effectiveness and efficiency to justify huge government spending on the edifice.
