APC Governors to Meet in Ilorin on Party Primaries

Date: 2014-10-21

All the governors on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) will meet in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital tomorrow on the aegis of the Progressive Governors' Forum (PGF).

THISDAY gathered that top on the agenda of the meeting is the forthcoming party primaries and other matters of national interest.

A source said the governors would also use the opportunity to hold a valedictory session in honour of the former Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, who left office last week.

"Please note that the governors will discuss the APC's approaching party primaries and other matters of national interest. The governors would also use the opportunity to hold a valedictory session in honour Fayemi, who left office," the source said.

The source explained that the governors' intervention became necessary following alleged constitutional lacunae the party is currently stuck with and for which the APC National Executive Committee (NEC) is planning to hold an extraordinary convention to correct.

He revealed that governors may have been called in by the leadership to see if it can assist in resolving issues relating to the method of primaries to be adopted and possibly broker a consensus among the competing presidential aspirants.

THISDAY also learnt that one of its presidential aspirants had threatened to go to court after the primaries if the constitutional matter is not corrected.

Confirming the latest development to journalists shortly after the party's NEC meeting at the weekend, its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said the party leaders did discussed at the meeting the need to amend the constitution and get the NEC approval for the extraordinary convention which will take place on October 29.

Mohammed said: "Principally, we proposed certain amendment to the constitution of the party that will allow the party to function much more efficiently and to that extent, we will hold what I call an extraordinary convention of the party on the 29 of this month in Abuja to submit the proposals of their amendment to the national convention of the party."

While reacting to the modality for the primaries, the APC spokesman said the party intends to use the October 29 extraordinary convention to ratify fresh proposals to cut down on the number of delegates that would partake in electing the flag- bearer of the party.

"It is part of the reason we need to amend our constitution because the Electoral Act, 2010 (as amended) says that one can conduct a primary but if that would happen, then one must be explicit on how you are going to conduct it and that is why we need to amend our constitution," he said.
