Kwara APC Denies 'Anointing' Aspirants

Date: 2014-11-14

No aspirant has been anointed for any elective office ahead the 2015 general elections, the Kwara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) said yesterday, dispelling wide rumours that its leadership has selected some candidates through a consensus arrangement.

The development is expected to end the recent spate of hostilities among some members of the party vying for various positions at the forthcoming polls.

Meanwhile, ahead of the 2015 general elections, the Emir of Ilorin and Chairman, Kwara State Traditional Council, Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, has canvassed peaceful options among the political class to in order to sustain continued unity of Nigeria.

He said he dreamt of a nation, despite its diverse human population, that would like Kwara State and allow its people to live together harmoniously without any discrimination. Describing politicians as the rudder of the nation's ship, the Emir urged them to be resolute and committed only to acts capable of enhancing nation building.

Addressing newsmen in Ilorin, the state APC Chairman, Ishola Balogun-Fulani, clarified that regardless any internal mechanism for screening aspirants, all would still participate in the primary election.

He said the sale of nomination forms for all elective offices was still in progress and that any party member interested in any position was free to pick one. Though the state was not against consensus arrangements, he said the party would still subject such arrangement to primaries, as all electoral processes for the emergence of candidates would be adhered to.

According to him, a local screening committee is already in place in all councils to ensure the emergence of credible candidates, but such aspirants would still have to participate in the party's congress.

More so, a screening committee from the party's national secretariat will arrive the state at the weekend to also screen aspirants who scale the local screening committee, though he hinted that the party's congresses have been postponed indefinitely.

Speaking to newsmen in Ilorin during a special prayer to mark his 19th anniversary as the 11th Emir of Ilorin, Sulu-Gambari described the people of Ilorin Emirate as peace-loving, liberal and accommodating.

The emir charged government at all levels to endeavour to always embark on programmes that could further uplift the standard of the community, stressing that there cannot be any meaningful development amidst bad leadership.

He also thanked God for the numerous developments witnessed in the emirate and Kwara State in general in the past 19 years, stating that more could still be achieved with mutual understanding and cooperation.
