Man remanded for killing Policeman

Date: 2014-12-08

A middle-aged man, Adam Mommom of Coca-Cola Road, Ilorin, Kwara State, who allegedly conspired with others now at large and beat a Police officer to death has been remanded at the Federal Prison, Oke-Kura, Ilorin.

The order to remand the accused was made by an Ilorin Magistrate Court before which he appeared on a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide, which contravenes Sections 97 and 221 of Penal Code Law.

The accused was indicted following a report at 'A' Division Police Station, Ilorin, that on August 11, 2014, a man was seen lying in his pool of blood helplessly along Coca-Cola Road, Ilorin.

A team of Policemen drafted to the scene later identified the man as Sergeant Danlami Thomas attached to 12 Police Mobile Force Squadron, Minna, Niger State, who was on special duty in Ilorin.

Police said that at that spot it was discovered that the deceased had multiple injuries on the forehead and he was rushed to Temitope Hospital, Ilorin, and later to the Police Clinics, Kulende, Ilorin, where he gave up the ghost.

Police First Information Report (FIR) stated that investigation conducted at the Department of Criminal Investigation, Ilorin, revealed that on August 10, 2014 at about 11:25pm along Coca-Cola Road, Ilorin, the accused, a suspect popularly known as UK and others at large criminally conspired and attacked the officer and hit him with plank on the forehead which resulted into multiple injuries on the head and nose.

The FIR added that further investigation revealed that immediately after the criminal act, the accused disappeared from Ilorin to unknown places until the accused was arrested on November 23, 2014 by the operatives of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Ilorin.

According to the FIR, further investigation revealed that the accused and others at large are notorious criminal terrorising innocent citizens along Coca-Cola Road, Ilorin and that the accused has several pending criminal cases before different courts in Ilorin Judicial Division.

The prosecutor, Corporal Elijah Abegunde told the court that effort was still ongoing to arrest other suspects who are on the run.

The prosecutor objected to the bail of the accused and urged the court to remand him pending the determination of the case.

The defence counsel, Mrs. A.A Jimoh prayed the court to release the accused on bail pending the outcome of investigation.

Magistrate A. Bello declined to the submission of the defence and he ordered that the accused be remanded at the Federal Prison, Oke-Kura, Ilorin, until the next adjourned date.

The case was adjourned to December 16, 2014 for further mention.
