Saraki launches Personal Health Record Book
The Health Record Book, which is the first of its kind in the country, was designed for the purpose of ensuring effective delivery, evaluation and monitoring of sustainable and effective public health strategies in maternal newborn and child morbidity.
Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Saraki, who reaffirmed the commitment of his administration to effective healthcare delivery across the State, stressed the importance of the record book especially in the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals.
According to him, the health record book will provide a veritable platform for tracking important health statistics and ensure access to vital health history on mother and child, in addition to providing critical demographic information.
He thanked the President of the Well-being Foundation and Kwara State First Lady, Mrs Oluwatoyin Saraki for identifying the book and encouraging the State Government for its adoption.
Dr Saraki also expressed appreciation to the National Primary Health Care Development Agency and other development partners for partnering the State Government and always ready to assist the State when called upon.
He, however, charged the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders in the health sector to work hard in ensuring that the record book was available to all pregnant women throughout the State.
"It is the responsibility of all hospitals in the State, including private hospitals to ensure that each pregnant woman possess the health record book and work hard towards preventing it from damage"; the governor said.
Dr Saraki, who also promised to give the programme maximum support to bring maternal and mortality rate in the State to the barest minimum, said he would encourage his colleagues through the Governors’ Forum to embrace it in their respective States to further boost healthcare delivery system in the country.
In her remarks, the First Lady, Mrs Oluwatoyin Saraki narrated her ordeal about stillbirth 18 years ago, disclosing that she initiated the programme in order to reduce maternal and morbidity rate in the State.
Mrs Saraki, who wondered why the increase in the death of pregnant women, which she said, was not applicable in the advanced countries, blamed it on the absence of health record to know the history of health status of patients, especially pregnant women.
Earlier, Commissioner for Health, Alhaji Ladi Hassan had disclosed that the Personal Health Record Book would enable the compilation of vital information on children and pregnant women, pointing out that it would go a long way in the prevention of maternal mortality.
He stated further that the health record book is a reliable data that would be able to stand the test of time.
Alhaji Hassan praised the State’s health sector for receiving encomiums across the country in the areas of free treatment for children 0-5years and pregnant women, supply of drugs and construction of Doctors’ quarters, among others.
