We won't endorse any candidate, Kwara CAN declares

Date: 2015-01-09

THE Kwara State chapter of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) will not ask its members to vote for any particular candidate in the forthcoming general elections.

But CAN has viewed it as a sinful act for any of its members to shirk his civic responsibilities especially the democratic choice of who becomes leaders over them.

According to the former Secretary of CAN in the state, Dr. Olusola Ajolore Tuesday in a chat with The Guardian in Ilorin, the Christian body being not a political association would find it inappropriate instructing its members on who to vote for.

He noted: "I am not so sure that CAN will take any position on who its members should vote for. Everybody must have freedom of choice on all the candidates. The members should ordinarily know that the issue of voting should be their civic duties. Besides, they should know that if they fail to carry out the duties, God will count it as a sin against them."

Already, the local chapter of CAN had since January 1st this year commenced a week long universal prayer session purposely for a hitch-free polls.

Ajolore said the prayer had focused mainly on the need to have a violence-free election in the state and for the emergence of God's own political leaders at the end of the elections.

"According to him, "we have been rejecting anything called violence, before, during or after the much awaited elections. We will continue to pray, as no one irrespective of his status can dictate to God. What God will do no man can stop it."

"The former CAN scribe noted, "who will suffer the consequences if violence is allowed? Certainly not the politicians but the commoners. Therefore, the politicians should not declare it a do or die thing. None of them receiving close to N28 million monthly will wait for violence when it breaks out. They have the means to run out of the country but not many of us have any other option than to stay back and face whatever consequences.

"So the drum of war by many of them now is due to their pockets and not as a result of any love for the citizens. We therefore need the people who are truly interested in moving the country forward. We don't need senators who don't have enough academic background but only interested in collecting sitting allowances."

He carpeted many Nigerian prophets allegedly capitalising on the present political situation to deceive Nigerians.

Ajolore said, "if God does not want me to say something I don't say it. We need to be careful with those commercialising prophecies. Woe betides a man who says it when God had not ordered him to say so. Be careful with a man who says it but it never come to pass."

On whether the CAN would sanction such erring prophets, he said the Christian body does not possess such power, as "it is merely an association."
