Local councils charged over revenue generation

The Kwara State government has charged local government councils to shore up their Internally Generated Revenue in the face of dwindling federal allocation.

The Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Community Development, Alhaji Abdullahi Sha'aba Umar disclosed this during an interactive sessions with the people of Isin and Irepodun Local Government respectively.

The Commissioner said the purpose of his visits was to have first hand information on the challenges facing the councils and deliberate on the possible way forward in order to ensure smooth running of the councils.

Alhaji Umar reminded the council workers that the state government was doing everything possible to ensure that their welfare is given utmost priority, adding that several states were still battling with the backlog of salary of their workers.

The commissioner paid courtesy call to the palaces of the traditional rulers of Olupo of Ajasse Ipo, Olusin of Isanlu-Isin and the Olomu of Omu-Aran respectively.

Alhaji Umar said it was necessary to observe tradition to seek the clearance and blessing of the traditional rulers before proceeding to the council secretariats.

The commissioner implored the Royal Fathers on the need to sensitize their sons and daughters in self help projects in other to complement the government work.

He commended the traditional rulers for maintaining peace and order in their respective domains.

While in Irepodun Local Government Council, the Chairman, Honourable Lukman Omolewa assured the commissioner that he had put everything in place to shore up their IGR in order to compliment the dwindling allocation from the federation.

He maintained that there was robust relationship between the council and the traditional institution which had resulted in the peaceful co-existence being enjoyed.

Earlier in Isin Local Government, the Chairman, Honourable Abdulmaruf Thani told the Honourable Commissioner that his visit to the council would rekindle their effort to perform more.

Honourable Thani assured the commissioner that the council would continue to do its best by giving the people the dividend of democracy despite the continuous drop in allocation coming from the federation account. The commissioner was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary, Hajia K S Amasa and directors of the ministry.
