JUSUN suspends strike in Kwara state

Date: 2015-02-14

The industrial action of the Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria, Kwara State Chapter has been suspended.

The State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Kamaldeen Ajibade stated this on Friday during a press briefing in Ilorin, the Kwara State Capital.

He added that government has also approved the payment of peculiarity allowance for all JUSUN members starting from this month as recommended by the committee set up by the state government to look into the impasse.

According to him, the decision was borne out of government's commitment to abiding by the rule of law as enshrined in the recent court judgments on the issue, the Nigerian Constitution and with a mutual understanding with the Union.

Barrister Ajibade who said the development would go a long way to fast-track the judicial process and address the untold hardship of congestion in the available prison facilities, restated the determination of government to continue to give priority attention to the critical sector.

Commendation
Earlier, the State Chairperson of JUSUN, Mrs Folake Laaro, commended the State Government, the State Chief Judge, Justice Durosinloun Kawu, the NBA and other relevant stakeholders who contributed in no small measure to address the matter.

In his remark, the Chairman of the Ilorin Branch of the Nigeria Bar Association, Mr Mobolaji Ojibara, described the event as an epoch making one, saying the understanding reached would restore sanity into the system.

Highlight of the event was the signing of a communiqué on the agreements reached which among other things prevailed on the State Government to comply with the constitutional provisions dealing with the funding of the judiciary.

The state government would also appropriate funds to the judiciary in accordance with revenue from the federal allocation and internally generated revenue, with the funds to be released monthly without subjecting the heads of court to sundry bureaucratic processes.

It would be recalled that JUSUN had embarked on industrial action for over a month and half on issues relating to its financial autonomy among other demands.

The event had in attendance the leadership of JUSUN, Chief Registrar of the State High Court, Solicitor- General of the State, and other relevant stakeholders.
