Insurgency: Kwara asks landlords to demand international passports from tenants

Date: 2015-03-15

As part of security measures against activities of criminals and terrorists, Kwara State government has directed landlords and house owners in the state to henceforth demand for international passports or other valid form of identifications before letting out their properties to tenants.

Speaking with journalists in Ilorin after the state's security council meeting, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Kamaldeen Ajibade, said that there had been an influx of internally displaced persons, occasioned by Boko Haram insurgency from the north eastern parts of the country, into the state in recent times.

"Landlords and homeowners who failed to carry out this measure, risk exposing themselves and their premises to criminal proceedings should their tenants be found by security agencies to be involved in criminal or unlawful activities", he said.

The commissioner, who recalled a 10-hour exchange of gun fire between a suspected Boko Haram member and military men in a residential building in the state's capital last week, also advised landlords and house owners in the state to verify the identities and scrutinize potential tenants before letting out their properties to them.

He also said that the state government had set up a committee headed by the state deputy governor, Mr. Peter Kisra, to work out modalities and put structures in place for managing the influx of IDPs into the state.

"As you are all aware, Kwara State's peaceful atmosphere has, in recent times, led to an expansion in the state's population. While council welcomed the situation as potentially beneficial to the state's economic and social life, it re-emphasised the need for greater vigilance on the part of security agencies and the public to prevent the infiltration of negative elements in the state.
