Tambuwal: IGP Abba should have resigned -Yusuf Ali

Date: 2015-03-22

An Ilorin-based legal luminary, Mallam Yusuf Ola-Olu Ali, in Ilorin yesterday took the Inspector General of Police, Mr Suleiman Abba, to the cleaner over his latest order restoring the security details of the Speaker, House of Representatives, Mr Aminu Tambuwal, declaring that in a saner clime Abba should have resigned from office.

He said it was strange that the IGP embroiled himself in controversy when he constituted himself into the law interpreter following the defection of Tambuwal from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) late last year.

Shortly after the Speaker announced his defection to the opposition, the Police authorities and Department of State Service allegedly ordered the withdrawal of security men attached to him, prompting public outrage against the action.

Despite persuasions by the House to make the IGP recognize Tambuwal as Speaker, Abba insisted that he would never refer to him as presiding officer of the green chamber because his defection from the ruling PDP to the APC had automatically nullified his speakership as well as his representation in the lower arm of the National Assembly.

IGP also noted that there was a subsisting court pronouncement on the issue and therefore, it would be improper for Tambuwal to still parade himself as Speaker of the House.

However, in an unknown circumstance, the Police authorities and DSS last week restored Tambuwal's security details, and this created anxiety in the political circle.

Speaking with newsmen after a walk tagged "Walk for Peace and Sanctity of Human Life" held at the instance of his law firm, Ghalib Chamber, Ali explained that the eventual restoration of Tambuwal's security team for inexplicable reasons should have forced IGP Abba to throw in the towel.

"He (Abba) took it upon himself to be interpreting the constitution when Tambuwal defected and he said the man had lost his seat.

"Actually, two days ago when I read that he had restored Tambuwal's security details, honourably he should have resigned because it has shown that the position he took, was illegal, unconstitutional and political on the stand of withdrawing the details in the first place.

"For an honourable person, he would just go. But Nigeria does not possess too many people who have principles. Unfortunate for Nigeria", the legal icon said.
