Don't Serve As Political Thugs, NANS Warns Students

Date: 2015-03-23

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Kwara Axis, has called on students and youths in the country not to be involved in violence that could disrupt success of the forthcoming general election.

The association made the call, just as it declared its opposition to further postponement of the election, saying the poll must be held as rescheduled.

The group advised students not to allow themselves to be used as tools for violence by politicians, who may want to perpetrate violence during and after the election.

Chairman of the Kwara Axis Joint Campus Committee of the NANS, Ibrahim Jeje, who spoke on behalf of the Axis, said students and youths as a major stakeholders, should contribute to the success of the election by discouraging violence.

He advised the students to take into cognisance the collective interest of the country's students in deciding whom to vote for and should not allow selfish interest or money inducement to influence their decision.

He stated: "It behooves on each and every one of us to make a significant contribution towards the development and progress of our dear country; one of such contributions is for us to vote for only credible, God-fearing and responsible leaders in the forthcoming general elections.

"Our decision to vote and the choice of whom to vote for should not be based on our selfish interests, but on the collective interests of Nigerian students, which is our own constituency.

"On election day, when you take a ballot paper to cast your vote - you will surely be faced with different choices as regards the candidate to vote for.

"One important thing you should take into consideration is that your eventual choice will have a huge impact on our lives and that of the generation of Nigerians to come.

"Let's not compromise our integrity and allow politicians to buy our conscience.

"We must not exchange our voting right for money. Our future is too precious to be exchanged for money - our future can't be priced.

"Most importantly, we must resist every attempt by desperate and unscrupulous politicians to use us as tools of political violence and social unrest.
