Political tsunami looms in Kwara - State APC

Date: 2015-04-06

The Kwara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has boasted that the state Governor, Abdulfattah Ahmed, will be re-elected in the April 11 governorship election in the state.

It compared the anticipated victory to "a political tsunami that will drive out the Peoples Democratic Party into oblivion."

The APC spokesperson in the state, Mr. Sulyman Buhari, made the remark in Ilorin on Sunday while reacting to Ahmed's posters that had lately flooded the state capital.

Daily Trust correspondent had observed on Saturday that the governor's posters could be found at strategic locations like Garin Alimi, Sawmill, General Roundabout, Oja Oba, Challenge among others, while those of the PDP governorship candidate, Senator Simeon Ajibola, had become very scanty.

Buhari said the development was an indication that PDP had become 'impotent' in the state and Nigeria at large.

He said, "The preponderance of the governor's posters shows clearly that APC is in charge of Kwara politics. After the tsunami that wiped PDP away on March 28, the posters of its governorship candidate became scanty. The last poll shows the end of the PDP across the nation but April 11 is when it will be buried nationwide.

"The posters were not torn by our party members. It was wind that blew them away. PDP, as a house, has been shattered and cannot be brought together. They have already lost hope in the struggle and there is no way they can succeed in the governorship election.

"My advice for them is to come back to where they really belong. Our party is large enough to accommodate them."

The PDP spokesperson in the state, Chief Rex Olawoye, however, said the party was re-strategising ahead of Saturday's election and would swing into action very soon.

Olawoye added that the huge posters were used by APC to cover up the "under-performance" of the state government by Ahmed-led administration.

He said, "Everything is about re-planning and re-strategising. We have found out that there are a number of moles among us and we have to be meticulous. We want to ensure that they are completely eliminated. We also have a committee that will submit its report on Monday. They will be able to tell us how best to start all over.

Everybody knows Governor Ahmed in Kwara and his performance, no matter how much he tries to brand it with posters. It is there for people to assess. There was never a time in our own practice that we gave priority to posters because our candidate is popular.

"No Kwaran can deny knowing Ajibola or feign ignorance of his performance. Anybody who wants to judge the forthcoming election based on the last one, has a huge failure in his hand."
