Start preparing for 2019, INEC tells elected office holders

Date: 2015-04-21

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) yesterday presented certificates of return to Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara State, his predecessor and senator-elect for Kwara-central, Dr. Bukola Saraki, with a call on them to serve Kwara and Nigeria well.

Those who also received their certificates of return were two other senators-elect, Mohammed Shaaba Lafiagi and Rafiu Ibrahim representing Kwara North and South respectively as well as six members-elect of the House of Representatives.

They are: Zakari Mohammed (Baruten/Kaiama), Ahman Patigi (Patigi/Edu/Moro), Tope Olayonu (Ifelodun/Offa/Oyun), Amuda Kannike (Ilorin East/South), Funke Adedoyin (Ekiti/Irepodun/Isin/Oke Ero) and Razaq Atunwa (Asa/Ilorin West). Atunwa and Adedoyin were absent at the ceremony as they were said to be outside the country.

INEC National Commissioner in charge of Kaduna, Niger, Kwara and FCT, Dr Chris Iyimoga, who handed the certificates to the winners, urged them to fulfil their promises to the people.

On his part, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Emmanuel Onucheyo, urged the winners to start working for the next election, saying 2019 is not far away.

He said that the commission was unable to present certificates of return to members of state assembly because it was yet to get the required number of signatures.

Governor Ahmed, who spoke on behalf of the recipients, said the occasion was special in the state's democratic journey, adding, "for the first time in the history of our democracy, all elected members from the state to National Assembly are members of the All Progressive Congress (APC)".

Ahmed, who was re-elected for a second term promised to upscale his programmes in the areas of infrastructural development, youth unemployment, agriculture, among others.
