Senate Presidency campaign disrupts proceedings

Date: 2015-05-13

Those aspiring for various Senate positions especially the office of the Senate President and their supporters took their campaign to the floor of the red chamber yesterday, disrupting proceedings.

This is even as Sen. Ahmed Lawan, Chairman, Senate Committee on Public Account, one of the front runners for the Senate presidency cancelled his scheduled briefing aimed at responding to an earlier one by his brothers for the North East geopolitical region of the country.

Other contenders for the No.3 office in the Federation are, Minority Leader, Senator George Akume and Chairman, Senate Committee on Environment and former governor of Kwara State, Senator Bukola Saraki.

The open campaigns in the hallowed chamber of the Senate was a reflection of the desperation of the candidates as a result of the failure to reach a consensus on the Senate Presidency contest.

The shuffle from one Senator to another among the interest groups was so much that the consideration for National Tobacco Control Bill was disrupted and distracted Sen. Chris Ngige charged that the Senate be called to order.

"Mr. President, please could you tell all these campaign co-ordinators to allow us treat this Bill! They are disrupting the chamber and we are not been allowed to give the Bill the utmost attention it deserved", he exclaimed.

Despite Sen. Ngige's chagrin, the desperate office seekers went ahead with their lobby business and the presiding Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, was forced to give specific ruling that" all campaigns for Senate Presidency is hereby suspended until the end of proceedings" Meanwhile, as the disagreement over the Senate Presidency he?ightened, members of the Southwest Caucus of the Senate are now split on whether or not to support particular candidates.
