Kwara Transport Workers Protest Passage Of Law
No fewer than a hundred workers with the Kwara State Transport Corporation, popularly known as 'Kwara Express', on Thursday, embarked on a peaceful protest to the state House of Assembly, over the passage of an act establishing the corporation.
Daily Times reports that Governor AbdulFatah Ahmed presented the bill to the House three years ago, which was passed into law on Wednesday. They felt dissatisfied with the passage and protested to the House to urgently revert it. The workers, most of who were in their official uniforms and led by their union leaders, chanted solidarity songs to condemn the action of the House.
Chairman of the workers union, Alhaji Ajao Jaji, while speaking with journalists, said they were not briefed on the implications of the passage of the bill.
He said the workers were not interested in becoming the staff of Harmony Holdings, which is currently supervising the affairs of the corporation. He urged the state government to post all workers to ministries or parastatals for continuation of their services.
He reminded them that the state governor has the right to create, repeal or amend any act as he wishes.
Yissa advised the aggrieved workers to decide on three options of joining the service of Harmony - the civil service or retirement from service. He advised them to present a written memo to the House on heir grievances on the repealed act. Daily Times recalled that the workers embarked on a similar peaceful protest on the repealed act to the offices of Harmony Holdings in llorin, on Wednesday.
