Rumpus in Kwara APC over chieftains' suspension

Date: 2015-06-01

Complaints and commentaries amongst the All Progressives Congress (APC) members in Kwara State have continued to trail the suspension from the party of Senator Ahmed Mohammed.

The senator, who represented Kwara North Senatorial district between 2003 and 2011, is among other chieftains of the party in Baruten Local Government Area who were served a one-year suspension for alleged anti-party activities on Thursday.

Also suspended were Alhaji Adamu Sabi, an out-going member of the state House of Assembly and Baruten LG Council chairman, Muhammed Omar Bio, who were sanctioned for one year and six months respectively.

Others are Alhaji Aliyu Kora Sabi and Muhammed Sunu Gofe who were suspended from the party for one year each.

A statement signed by the party's Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Sulyman Buhari, explained that the suspension followed a report submitted by a panel of enquiry set up by the state APC to investigate the alleged anti-party activities.

More members were however added to the suspension list yesterday. They were Alhaji Abdulrasheed Lafia Ibrahim, the vice chairman of the council who was suspended for six months; Alh Samari Abdullahi suspended for a year and Alhaji Abubakar Abdullahi Gunu, the G20 Coordinator of Baruten local government suspended for one year.

Daily Trust learnt that the panel of enquiry was set up to investigate petition written by some stakeholders of the party, accusing the suspended members of involving in anti-party activities.

Sources disclosed that the suspension was largely fuelled by the skirmishes between the suspended members and a member of the House of Representatives, Rep Zakari Mohammed, who is believed to enjoy the backing of the APC leadership.

Crisis reportedly started when some members opposed the nomination of Mohammed, who is the outgoing House spokesman during the March 28 National Assembly election to represent Kaiama/Baruten federal constituency.

However, his emergence as the party's candidate precipitated the crisis that polarised the party in the two local governments as members have divided loyalty, some for Mohammed Zakari and others for Senator Mohammed. Effort to speak with the suspended members proved abortive as they all declined comments.

One of them however told Daily Trust on condition of anonymity that they stand by the decision of the party which is supreme.
