Nigeria needs Ministry of Peace - UNILORIN VC

Date: 2015-07-28

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, has called for the establishment of a Ministry of Peace and Reconciliation in Nigeria. Ambali said this while speaking with reporters in Ilorin last week.

The Vice Chancellor said the ministry will be important in dousing incessant ethno-religious violence in the country.

"The Ministry of Peace is already in operation in countries like Costa-Rica and Denmark among others and you can see the results," Ambali said. .

"What is wrong if we have the same thing here in Nigeria?" .

"Having a full-fledged Ministry for Peace would not be a bad idea as it would be in line with the practice in countries like Denmark and Costa Rica among others that are known for peace in the world today." .

He added that "universities can introduce it as a compulsory module for their students to institutionalize it here".

The Vice Chancellor urged the government to find a holistic solution to the security challenges in the northern part of the country. .
