Opinion: Buhari, complete Lagos/Ibadan- Ilorin Expressway. By Tajudeen Alalade

Date: 2015-08-12

When former President Goodluck Jonathan announced the award of contract for the rehabilitation of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, I was so happy that motorists who ply the road would soon heave a sigh of relief.

As someone who works in Lagos, whose family lives in Ibadan, I travel on the road every Friday.

Apart from the terrible condition of the road, which made me weak after each journey, I also witnessed several fatal accidents on the road.

Most of these accidents could have been avoided if the road was in a good condition; that was why I became so happy when the contractors began work on the road.

Unfortunately, since the loss of Dr Jonathan in the presidential election, and the assumption of President Muhammadu Buhari, the contractors have stopped work.

This expressway is one of the busiest in the country, and we can imagine the number of people who ply it on a daily basis. Since the accidents are always fatal, we cannot imagine how many people have been killed on the road.

While reading the newspaper last week, an official of one of the firms handling the road attributed the stoppage of work to the fact that money had not been paid to the firms.

I don't know what the administration of President Buhari is planning for the road, but I am sure he is also concerned about the condition of the expressway built by the administration of General Olusegun Obasanjo in 1977.

I want President Buhari to quickly call the contractors for a parley so that what has stopped the work can be solved as soon as possible.

Apart from the Lagos/Ibadan Expressway, the Ibadan-Ilorin Expressway is also suffering the same fate, and I hope the administration of President Buhari will not disappoint the people of the South West by not completing these road projects.
