Don seeks constitutional roles for traditional rulers

Date: 2012-05-30

Communities in Nigeria and the people have been enjoined to return to their roots by according the  traditional royal fathers their pride of place in society.

Speaking as a guest lecturer at the send forth reception in honour of the retired Executive Director, Nigerian Stored Products Research Institute (NSPRI), Olori Mojisola Adesida, wife of the Deji of Akure, in Ilorin recently.

The Registrar of the University of Ilorin, Mrs Olufolake Oyeyemi, said the nation's royal fathers should be given constitutional role so that they can contribute more meaningfully to national debate without being labeled partisan.

Mrs Oyeyemi, who spoke on topic; "Leadership: an elixir for economic and social rebirth in Nigeria", said leadership was in short supply in the country because of the inability, failure or unwillingness of our leaders to act responsibly and lead by example.

The Unilorin registrar, who charged Nigerians to take their future in their  hands, said "the problem with Nigeria lies with you and I."

"We can effect the much-needed change by exercising our franchise during general election where we have the opportunity to vote for leaders who represent our best interest and vote out those who have no business in governance," she said.

Mrs Oyeyemi, who said people voted based on the qualities of the aspiring politician and the party's manifesto in the 'good olden days', lamented that the story is different today as people now vote without thinking about the future of the country and its people because of corruption, widespread poverty, ethnic considerations and other strange reasons.

She said that Nigerians mortgage the country and prepare a fertile ground for bad leaders to be enthroned thus, endangering the future of children, when they align with warped reasoning in choosing leaders.

She opined that Nigerian leaders would definitely think twice if they know that people would demand an account of stewardship and throw them out of office at the end of their tenure for poor performance.

The Unilorin registrar, who  charged the retiree to continue her good works at another level by rendering unqualified service to her people as the Olori of Akure Kingdom, added that everyone too can make a difference in a small corner to make the country better by being a good leader.
