APC, PDP chieftains say party unfair to Saraki

Date: 2015-09-21

The Senate President Bukola Saraki yesterday received more support and solidarity over his travail with the Code of Conduct Tribunal prosecuting him over alleged assets falsification.

A veteran politician and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ilorin, Kwara State, Alhaji Salau Alabi Olorin blamed the leadership of the APC for the unfair treatment being meted out to Saraki.

Also a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos, Mr. Kamal Olounoje warned the APC to thread cautiously, saying the desperation to remove Saraki may consume the party.

Speaking to Daily Trust on Sunday, Olounoje who is the the Vice-Chairman of PDP for Lagos Central described Saraki as a man of integrity.

He also condemned call in some quarters for his resignation, saying he remains innocent until proven guilty.

Olounoje said, "The point I want to raise is the call for his resignation. Resign for what? Did Tinubu resign during his problem with the Code of Conduct Bureau? Saraki is an honourable person. He is a man of integrity with good family background. Those that don't have family background are the one trying to pull Saraki down".

Also speaking, Olorin condemned the silence of President Muhammadu Buhari over the ongoing development which he said smacks of persecution of Saraki.

He said the leadership of the APC is not being fair to Saraki despite his contributions to the success of the party in the last election.

He said, "What is happening is clear to the blind that Senator Bukola Saraki is a victim of political persecution. We are all witnesses to the high level resentment to his emergence as Senate President by some interests in the APC.

"It is clear that those against Saraki are up in arms again in an evil and devilish plot to remove him but they will fail. Is it not suspicious that he is being prosecuted for an offence allegedly committed some 13 years ago when he was governor? Was the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) not awake to its responsibility then? Something is fishy somewhere.

"I will only put the blame on the leadership of APC which has chosen to remain indifferent to the present travail of Saraki which has further confirmed our fear that the whole saga was the handiwork of a few hawks within the party.

"Saraki does not deserve the present treatment being meted out to him as a leader of the party in his own right and as someone who risked his life to support the APC to victory in the last elections. There is no doubt the fact that without the Saraki's group and clout, the victory of the APC would not have been possible".

He charged the President to come out of his closet and speak out on the matter, saying his silence in the face of the persecution of Saraki is unfortunate.
