House Seeks Correct statistics on rural schools

The Kwara State of Assembly has directed the state Universal BASIC Education (SUBEB) to take proper statistics of rural schools with a view to identifying their problems.

The House in a notice motion titled "Deplorable Condition of Primary Schools in Rural Areas in Kwara State; KWHAM II" which was moved on Wednesday by the deputy speaker, Prof. Mohammed Gana Visa representing Patigi constituency and seconded by Hon. Suleiman Sunaboro of Ilesha/Gwanara constituency noted that the deplorable condition of rural schools was not in tandem with the state education reform agenda.

The legislature observed that many schools, especially in the rural araeas are without enough teachers.

It added that most taeachers posted to rural areas do not reside there but instead report for duty from neighbouring urban centres.

The lawmakers further expressed concern that some of the teachers posted to rural schools do make shifting arrangement within themselves in order to carry out their duties on weekdays.

According to the motion,"whereas in some villiages, pupils of different classes are taught in one classroom while most of these classrooms lack furniture, equipment and other instructional materials.

"Whereas the deplorable condtion of these rural school is not tendem with the state education reform agenda."

The House directed SUBEB to look into the possibility of designating some schools at junior primary school and senior primary school with a view to maximizing the available resources for the few pupils.

It added that no person, including political office holders should intervene in the posting of teachers to the rural areas.

The legislature also ordered SUBEB to ensure even distribution of teachers to rural schools and ensure proper monitoring of teachers to achieve the set objectives.

Meanwhile, the Kwara State Content Development Agency and for other connected purposes Bill has been passed into law.

Motion for third reading and final passage was moved by majority leader, chief AbdulKareem Abdulganiyu and seconded Hon. Mallam Mande Aliyu.

Speaking after the passage of the bills, the speaker, Barrister Razak Atunwa directed the Clark, Elder Ayotunde Oyeniyi to prepare the neat copy for Governor AbdulFatah Ahmed's assent.
