Yuletide: FRSC reiterates zero tolerance for road traffic violation

Date: 2015-12-11

Mr Abdulhakeem Abdulkareem, the Director Operations, Omu-Aran Unit Command, Federal Road Safety Commission(FRSC), has reiterated the command's zero tolerance to road traffic violation during Christmas and New year celebrations.

Abdulkareem stated this in Omu-Aran, Kwara, on Thursday while reacting to an auto-accident at Koko village, along Ilorin-Ajase-Ipo highway on Wednesday afternoon.

No fewer than 12 passengers lost their lives in the accident that involved an 18-seater commercial bus and a DAF truck with six other passengers sustaining varying degrees of injuries.

The accident, which occurred at about 2 p.m., had the driver of the truck overtaking carelessly before having a head-on collision with an Osun-bound 18-seater bus.

The casualties in the accident, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) learnt, were 10 adults and two children, comprising five males and seven females.

Kwara Commandant of FRSC, Oladayo Ademoluti, confirmed the story to NAN correspondent.

He said that the corpses of the victims had been deposited at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital.

Abdulkareem said that the command's determination to ensure smooth and accident-free festivals informed the recent step-up of its pre-loading inspection of vehicles at various motor parks within the communities.

The FRSC boss said that most causes of incessant road crashes, especially on the highways were traceable to human errors, stressing that the command would intensify its patrols to ensure maximum compliance by motorists.

He said that the command's mini-clinic had been fortified with necessary medical facilities to cater for accident victims.

Abdulkareem, who advised motorists to be extra careful while driving during the yuletide period and beyond, reiterated the command's zero tolerance to speeding and reckless overtaking.

He also warned motorists to desist from patronising worn-out or second-hand "tokunbo" tyres for their vehicle usage, pointing out that such tyres could burst at any time. (NAN)
