Veteran Broadcaster calls for support to curb violence against women, children
A Veteran Broadcaster Mrs. Moji Makanjuola, has enjoined Nigerians, irrespective of their status, to join hands with the three tiers of government and stakeholders in curbing violence against children and women in the country.
Mrs. Makanjuola who gave the advice in Ilorin the kwara State capital North Central Nigeria while speaking with VON, described violence against women as a worldwide menace that has eaten deep into the fabric of the society.According to the seasoned broadcaster, in recent times in Nigeria, there have been several cases of violence against women adding that most of these cases are kept silent despite their pervasiveness. She noted that issues like sexual harassment, trafficking in women and girls, sex selection, early marriage, among others are fast becoming epidemics plaguing Nigeria as it is the case globally.
Health Reportage
On health coverage and reporting by media, she stressed the need for various media houses in the country to show more priority to health reportage, pointing out that health is all about development. Speaking on the International Society of Media in Public Health,(ISMPH), Annual Retreat held in the Ilorin, Mrs Makanjuola who is the Executive Director, said the organisation is to serve as a tool for enlightenment, and an eye and ear for journalists in the health reportage.
The Veteran Broadcaster, while speaking on women participation in politics, urged Nigerian women to be more focused and determined, adding that Nigerian women are indispensable when it comes to politics. She called for media support for women in politics and expressed optimism that 2019 general election; women will speak with one voice.
Mrs. Makanjuola noted that in every election, women constituted the highest percentage of the electorate and often painstakingly waited to cast their votes. The veteran journalist and seasoned broadcaster expressed dismay over poor reportage of health related issues in the country.
Mrs. Makanjuola said what inspired her in Health reporting was a traumatic experience she went through when she lost her mother to brain hemorrhage, due to an injury she sustained from an accident. She advised journalists in the country to show more commitment in health reporting for overall development of health sector.
