Workshop panelists seek amendment of EFCC Act

Date: 2016-02-09

Discussants at a workshop organised by the University of Ilorin Anti-Corruption and Transparency Monitoring Unit (ACTU) have called for the amendment of certain provisions of the Act establishing the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) if the on-going anti-corruption drive of the Federal Government is to make the desired impact.

Rising from the Workshop, themed "Integrity and Transparency", the discussants also canvassed the institution of what they called a "Hall of Shame" for corrupt citizens, adding that "corrupt people should not be celebrated by the society". These were parts of the resolutions of the Workshop as contained in a communiqué signed by the Chairman, Unilorin ACTU, Prof Ayo O. Ogunlela. According to the communique, the Workshop demanded that "Section 17 of the EFCC Act should be redefined to make the issue of bribery of public officers more explicit".

The Workshop also advised that "Section 6 of the EFCC Act should be enforced, particularly where it says that investigations should be conducted into the properties of any person if it appears to the Commission that the person's life style and extent of the properties are not justified by his/her source of income".

Discussants at the Workshop, which was declared open by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), included an Ilorin-based lawyer, Mr. John Olusola Baiyeshea (SAN); the Deputy Director and Head System Study, Research and Statistics of the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, (ICPC), Abuja, Mr. B.B. Gaji; Prof M.A. Belewu of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Ilorin; Prof O.B. Oloyede of the Department of Bio-Chemistry, University of Ilorin; and Prof.J. F.
