Why Islamic groups must campaign against terror - Herald GM

Date: 2016-02-10

Disturbed by the raging terror onslaught in some northern parts of the country, General Manager of Kwara State Printing and Corporation, publisher of The Herald titles, Alhaji Abdulrazaq Adebayo, in Ilorin yesterday challenged Islamic societies to float sensitization programmes on the doctrines and ideologies of the religion.

He said the campaign should also be tailored towards correcting the impression in some quarters where Boko-Haram unwholesome activities were seen under Islamic movement.

Adebayo spoke when he played host to members of the media unit of the Kwara State chapter of The Muslim Congress/Organisation of Tadhomunu Muslimeen who were on a courtesy visit to the corporate office of the medium outfit. The General Manager emphasized on the need to capitalize on areas that had been bastardized in Islam by the outlawed sect and propagate the true teachings and principles of the religion. He expressed displeasure that the sect has continued to perpetrate its attack under the name of Islam.

Adebayo also noted that the way Islam is practiced in the country was at variance with what obtainable in Saudi Arabia, where the religion took its root. He called on Islamic organisations to embark on advocacy drive to correct certain anomalies in the system.

The Head of the state chapter of the Media Unit of The Muslim Congress/Organisation of Tadhomunu Muslimeen, Mallam Hamzah Abdurraheem, who led the team, said the group's activities were focused on socio-economic emancipation of the people, adding that the organisation's missionary was non-violent. He maintained that the group was assisting the government to ensure that correct Islamic doctrines were inculcated in muslims.

Abdurraheem, who disclosed the plan of the organisation to launch a quarterly magazine, thanked The Herald newspapers for its unbiased reportage especially on the recent alleged assault meted on a Muslim woman wearing hijab by some military personnel at Sobi barrack, Ilorin.
