Our reputation for prudence, accountability is well-known - VC

Date: 2016-02-23

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), has said that the University has a unique reputation for prudence and accountability in all its financial dealings.

Prof. Ambali made the observation while debunking recent reports in a section of the press that the House of Representatives Committee on Tertiary Education, chaired by Hon. Aminu Suleiman, declined to look into the 2016 budget proposals of the University because of some alleged discrepancies.

Describing the reports as "malicious, misleading and unfounded", the Vice-Chancellor said that the only issue raised by some Committee members while reviewing the institution's 2015 budget performance was that some sections of the 2015 budget report lacked detailed analysis of certain expenditure. He said that he had immediately directed the University's Bursary Department to provide the required details, which had been promptly submitted to the lawmakers.

Prof. Ambali noted that during his subsequent visit to the National Assembly, when he drew the attention of some members of the Committee to the malicious reports, the lawmakers expressed surprise, as, according to them, "nothing like that happened during the budget defence session." "They even asked us to bring the copies of those newspapers so that they would react to it officially," he said.

The Vice-Chancellor explained that the University was not the only institution ordered by the lawmakers to provide further clarifications and details during the budget defence. "They said they needed details of some of the bills we submitted and we are not the only university that such clarifications were demanded from," he noted.

Prof. Amabli said that "everybody, including the legislators, knows Unilorin for prudence and accountability. We have all the records. All we did was to ask our Bursary Department to provide the details."
