Trader, 42, Remanded In Prison Over N2m Fraud

An Ilorin Magistrate's Court on Wednesday remanded in prison a 45-year-old trader, Uchenna Okafor of Ibrahim Taiwo road Ilorin over alleged N2 million fraud.

The accused was dragged to court on a four-count charge of criminal conspiracy, breach of trust, intimidation and cheating.

The police prosecutor, Insp. Nasiru Yusuf, told the court that the case was filed following a complaint to the Commissioner of Police, by one Kolawole Samuel, General Manager of Bodis Financial consult Ilorin against Uchemna Okafor.

Yusuf said that sometimes in July 2014, the accused applied for and was granted a loan of two million naira by the company which he was to repay in 2015, but failed to do so. He said that the accused subsequently absconded and all effort to get him proved abortive.

The prosecutor told the court that the accused had also threatened to kill the complainant when they spoke on phone.

"Investigation conducted at X-Squad Unit, revealed that Uchenna Okafor collected the said amount from Bodis Financial Consult and he refused to pay the loan with interest that has accumulated to N7 000 000.00," Yusuf said. He said the offence is contrary to sections 312, 397 and 322 of the Penal Code Law.

Yusuf urged the court to adjourn the case for further mention as investigation was ongoing. Magistrate Mohammed Ibrahim ordered the accused to be remanded at Federal Prison, Oke-Kura Ilorin and adjourned the case till March 21, for mention.
