Kwara Govt. Plants 25,000 Trees To Tackle Deforestation
Kwara State Government has embarked on plantation of over 25,000 tree seedlings of about 20 hectares in some Secondary Schools in all the sixteen Local Government Areas in the State.
This programme, the government said was adopted to serve as measures towards preventing deforestation and other natural environmental disaster in the state.
Commissioner for Environment and Forestry in the state, Hon. Samuel Bamisaiye stated this in Ilorin, yesterday, during the sensitisation and awareness campaign to some selected Secondary Schools across the 16 Local Government Areas in the State.
Bamisaiye who was represented by the Head of the Environmental Club Team constituted in the ministry, Evang. Timothy Oluwaponle, noted that the need for youths to contribute to environmental development in order to improve the standard of living in Kwara State was desirable.
He disclosed that the campaign is aimed at creating grassroots awareness of the dangers of deforestation and the negative effects of Charcoal production on the environment.
The commissioner however pointed out that the State Government has provided free Gmelina, Teak and Cashew tree seedlings to be planted across the State while calling on interested Secondary Schools to come to the Ministry of Environment and Forestry for collection.
