Offa progressives lament failure of leadership

Date: 2016-05-29

Abdul Ibiyeye, a representative of Offa Progressives, a socio-political group, has urged Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara State not to tow the bad and financially reckless life of former governor, Bukola Saraki, who is currently facing counts of financial recklessness at the Code of Conduct Tribunal.

"It is a sad period for us Kwarans, as we watched the CCT trial where the senate president is said to have allegedly acquired luxurious properties as governor. The horrible state of infrastructure in the state is an obvious testament to the financial recklessness that characterised Saraki's tenure as Kwara State governor. Basic infrastructures were worse off than how he met them, while major road networks such as the Ilorin to Offa road remains an embarrassing stigma and a death trap due to lack of maintenance.

"Offa is the second biggest town in the state and this stretch of federal road is only next in traffic volume to the Ilorin - Ogbomosho - Ibadan Expressway. Annual traffic fatality rate has quadrupled on this road in the past 10 years and the livelihoods of tens of thousands of Kwarans depend on this road as they helplessly ply this route to earn their daily bread. How could a road of such commercial value not be on the priority list of any reasonable state administration even though it's a 'federal' road?"

Ibiyeye said: "It is common for thieves, rapists and other miscreants to ensconce themselves in the worse portions of the roads where all vehicles virtually come to a halt.

He said though the Saraki Administration earmarked hundreds of millions for the rehabilitation of the road to his cronies, nothing concrete happened beyond the mere refilling of some of the dangerous potholes.

He said: "It's utterly disturbing for Kwarans that a 50-year-old state looks and wears the semblance of a Somali state and lacks the infrastructural, health, educational and general socio-economical maturity of its contemporary states like Kano and Kaduna."
