Unravelling the mysterious murder of a Kwara medical doctor

Date: 2016-08-16

In the last three weeks, the myth surrounding astonished disappearance of Abdulkareem Tunde Abdulrahman, a medical doctor in Kwara State remained unfathomable until few days ago. AHMED 'LATEEF blows the lid on what transpired.

On Saturday July 23, 2016, Tunde Abdulrahman, a medical officer with the Kwara State Hospital Management Bureau dispatched to Omu-Aran in Irepodun Local Government Area of the state, woke up from his bed hale and hearty without ominous signs of lurking trouble.

As usual, he brushed his teeth and carried out ritual domestic chores at his residence, Plot 3, Professor Awe Close, Off Abdulkareem Adisa Street, GRA, Ilorin.

The 34 year old medical expert was initially in Jigawa State where he had a stint on medical mission, but returned to his country home of Ilorin, Kwara State capital to continue his medical expertise.

He was reportedly employed by the state Hospital Management Bureau and later deployed in Omu-Aran General Hospital for medical sojourn as part of prerequisites in the medical profession.

On the afternoon of the day preceding his mysterious disappearance, Tunde Abdulrahman, was said to have been visited by two unknown guests, who came to inquire on issues yet to be unraveled. The guests were said to have been led to the apartment of the slain medical officer by one Mohammed Jamiu.

Jamiu, son of the private security guard at the residence of the father of the deceased, Barrister Abdulrahman Alarape Adeyi, had allegedly hatched a plot to end the life of the medical doctor with the two strange guests.

Oblivious of their devilish mission, the contrived calling of the visitors was ostensibly to prepare the ground for their coming back later in the night to launch the marauding mission.

After having a discussion with the men of the underworld, they reportedly departed while Tunde Abdulrahman returned to his room unaware that the end was near for him.

Later in the wee hours of the day, around 1am of July Sunday 24, the unwanted guests allegedly with active connivance of Jamiu stormed the apartment of the medical doctor and hacked him to death with dangerous objects.

Tunde Abdulrahman, a member of the Kwara State chapter of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) died instantly without anyone knowledge and subsequently smuggled into the booth of his waiting Toyota Corolla and driven to unknown destination.

The murderous killing was meant to be a clean operation without any trace of suspicion of insider complicity, it was learnt.

Early in the morning, members of the household were taken aback when the slain medical officer was not found in his room while his car was also not sighted within the premises of his father's house.

It was at this point that the security guard, father of the prime suspect was accosted on the whereabouts of the medical doctor and feigned ignorance severally.

The security guard was said to have told the family and the police on number of occasions that slain doctor packed some of his belongings and drove himself out around 1am of the ill-fated day.

However, the intervention of intelligence operatives in the case with grilling of the prime suspect's father opened the can of warms into how and manner the heinous act was perpetrated.

It was in the process of ascertaining and unraveling the culprits in the gruesome killing of the doctor that two of his phones were tracked and found in possession of some suspects who are currently cooling their feet in the net of security operatives.

The father of the prime suspect was also picked up and after serial interrogations, he blew the lid by revealing that it was his son that masterminded the gruesome killing.

Hitherto, it was the initial statement credited to the father of the suspect on the whereabouts of the victims that everyone acted on, and prompted the NMA, the association he belonged, to declare him missing.

Findings showed that the prime suspect allegedly terminated the life of the medical doctor to avenge the death of his mother who died of cholera two years ago, even though the parents of the late doctor shouldered the expenses for the burial of the suspect's late mother.

A source confided in our correspondent that the suspect and his siblings, who have been living in the deceased father's residence in the last ten years, were unhappy over the demise of their mother and thus sought all avenues to take revenge.

It was learnt that the prime suspect was also seen by yet to be identified persons around Challenge area in Ilorin cruising in the deceased's car shortly after committing the crime but later vanished into thin air.

He also made away with all the belongings of the deceased in his room, it was learnt.

The father of the suspect, a Bennoise, was reported to be providing clues on how the doctor was killed and his corpse driven away to unknown destination.

"On the day Tunde (Abdulrahman) was declared missing, the father of the suspect claimed the deceased drove himself out around 5am without telling anyone where he was heading to.

"The father of the suspect did not initially cooperate with the security personnel. He denied ever knowing anything about the death of Tunde Abdulrahman. When they mounted pressure on him, he started making confessional statements.

"He has told them (security team) that it was his son, Jamiu, who connived with other accomplices to kill our son. They came in the afternoon of the preceding day of the incident under the pretense of making inquiry on unknown issues. Unknown to Tunde (the deceased), they deliberately came to assess the environment in preparation for the evil plot to be committed later that night.

"To our surprise, the prime suspect who was released from Prison in March this year for a certain criminal offence, on that fateful night, came with his accomplices and they went straight into the apartment of Tunde where they hacked him to death in his room.

"After accomplishing their heinous mission, they dragged his body into the booth of his car and drove away to an unknown destination. It was when his two mobile phones were tracked that the truth started coming out about how and who killed him", our source revealed.

The suspect, a Bennoise was said to have been released from Prison March this year for the crime yet to be ascertained.

When our correspondent visited the residence of the deceased at the weekend, the atmosphere was mournful. While some family members were seen shedding tears, others were seen in clusters with grim look, discussing the bizarre incident.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ajayi Okasanmi, confirmed the arrest of some suspects who are now undergoing interrogation with security operatives.

It is recalled that the state chapter of Nigeria Medical Association had alerted the public that a member of the association, Dr AbdulKareem Tunde-AbdulRahman, was missing.

He was said to have driven out in his navy blue Toyota Corolla car, from his residence in Ilorin, at 6am last Sunday and had since not been seen.

It was gathered that the missing doctor wore a shirt and trousers as of the time he left his Ilorin residence.

Olawepo, who spoke with journalists in Ilorin, said the missing doctor was working with the Kwara State Government and was posted to the General Hospital, Omu-Aran, lrepodun Local Government Area of the state.

He added that Tunde-AbdulRahman was living in Omu-Aran, where he worked, but at weekends, stayed in his father's residence in Ilorin.

Olawepo said, "The missing doctor was seen last Sunday morning before he drove out of the house. Since then, we have not seen him. There is no lead to his whereabouts."

He stated that members of the association had made efforts to find him.
