‘Police retirees can’t access housing fund’ - Ajeka

Date: 2012-07-23

National President, Association of Police Pencom Retired Officers, Dr. Moses Ajeka, has said that the pensioners are being unfairly treated in the National Housing Fund and other pension issues.

Ajeka, who spoke in Ilorin on Saturday during the inauguration of the Kwara State branch of Elders’ Club of Nigeria, another name for the association, said many of the retirees had difficulty accessing the fund.

He also alleged that many of them who were qualified for houses from the NHF had yet to get theirs.

Kwara State Chairman of the association, Alhaji Lasisi Akinlabi, said many of the retirees, despite various verification exercises were not benefitting from their contributions to the scheme.

He urged the Federal Government to  come to their aid and improve their living conditions.

"The worst situation is the issue of National Housing Fund contribution deducted from our salaries. After retirement, all efforts made to withdraw our money were futile.  We have been issued with passbooks and account numbers.  This is our money and should be refunded without delay.

"We are asking the police authority to take up this matter with a view to refunding our money to us without conditions."

Manager, Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, Ilorin branch, Mr. Nurudeen Muhammad, told the retirees that the fund was intact.

He stated that the Act that established NHF said that after 35 years in service or when the person is 60 years, the retiree can approach the Federal Mortgage Bank for his fund.

He added that the money would be given to the retirees and advised those with complaints to lodge them at their state offices, adding them that they would be well treated.

He said, "Some of them retired when they are not up 35 years in service and some of them are not up to 60 years. We can only give them when they are up to 60 years except in the case of incapability.

"So once they apply to us, and all documents required are complete, we will send it to office for processing.  Initially, we were giving them cheque but because of the CBN’s directive, everything now is through e-payment."
