We pay full salary to our staff despite recession-Unilorin VC

Date: 2017-02-14

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof AbdulGaniyu Ambali, has disclosed that the University was among the three universities in Nigeria that had continuously paid full salaries despite the economic downturn in the country.

Ambali, who disclosed this at the University's 51st meeting of the Congregation of the University held at the University Main Auditorium in Ilorin, Kwara State, lamented that the recession had led to about 15 percent shortfall in allocations from the Federal Government.

The Vice Chancellor explained that the University made up for the shortfall through review of its Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), to accommodate other source of revenue.

This was contained in the Monday edition of Unilorin Bulletin, an official newsletter of the university, which was made available to The Guild in Ilorin.

Pointing out that this had ongoing since January 2016, the VC stressed that during his tenure, staff welfare would always be paramount and would do everything to make sure that staff was motivated.

Ambali lamented that this situation had led to the accumulation of cooperative deductions, a challenge he said was being sorted out.

"The University Council has deliberated on this and advised that we continue doing what we are doing because many people within and outside the University appreciate this effort", promising that "all the deductions that are yet to be remitted to the cooperative societies will be paid in full as soon as we get the backlog of allocations from government."

Speaking on the state of transportation and security on campus, Ambali expressed management's readiness to tackle all the transportation challenges facing the students.

In his remarks, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research, Technology and Innovations), Prof. G.A Olatunji, said that congregation is a forum to gather ideas, develop and bring improvement to the University.
