Gov. Ahmed Postpones Take-off of Ban on Okada

Governor Abdlufatah Ahmed this afternoon, via a facebook post, announced a four-week postponement of the commencement on the ban on Okada in parts of Ilorin.

He posted: "In the spirit of consensus, I have postponed by 4 weeks the ban on Okadas from business areas of Ilorin to give them more time to adjust to the change."

The Kwara State Government has postponed by thirty days, the ban of commercial motorcyclists, otherwise known as Okada, from business areas of Ilorin metropolis. With the postponement, the ban will now take effect from the fourth of next month.

Announcing the extension in Ilorin after a meeting with the Kwara State Joint Association of motor Cycle Riders Association, led by its chairman, Abdulraheem Akanbi the State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Prince Tunji Morounfoye said the State Governor, Alhaji AbdulFatah Ahmed granted the concession in the spirit of magnanimity to give the motorcyclists additional time to adjust to the changes before implementing the ban.

Morounfoye also said the meeting also agreed that all motorcyclists must within the next two weeks belong to one of the recognized seven motor cycle organisations in the state.

According to him, the meeting presided over by the State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed agreed that all Okada riders must henceforth put on their uniforms adorn with personalize numbers for easy identification.

The Commissioner urged the motorcyclists to utilise the postponement to identify other suitable areas of operation, adding that the ban was necessitated by the need to ensure the security of lives and property across the metropolis. 

According to him, government has provided two hundred and fifty five tricycles to youths, to ameliorate the impact of the ban on commuters in the affected areas.

The Commissioner said government would continue to implement measures to enhance the well-being of the populace, adding that the ban on motorcyclists from parts of Ilorin was not punitive but in the interest of the collective security of all.

Morounfoye assured the people of the State that government would do everything to protect lives and properties of all and sundry.
