'Nigeria's economy still threatened by corruption' - Awoyale

Date: 2012-08-06

The President, Orisun Igbomina, a socio-cultural cum political group of people from Kwara South district, Kwara State, Chief Gbenga Awoyale, said this while addressing newsmen in Ilorin on Thursday.

He, therefore, described the fight against corruption as that which cannot be fought alone by President Goodluck Jonathan but by every Nigerian.

Awoyale observed that most high brawl cases of corruption were perpetrated by people that are close to the government.

He said, "No matter how highly placed a person is in the society, once an allegation of corruption had been made, such person must be prosecuted by having his properties confiscated and sent to jail if necessary. Government should stop paying lip service to the fight against corruption."

Awoyale stated that good governance was an antidote to killings and other security challenges in the country. "There must be equity and fairness in the distribution of our commonwealth as this will help in eliminating the menace of kidnapping, armed robbery and other prevalent security challenges," he added.

He decried the unfolding event at Mpape, a village in the Bwari Local Government Area of the Federal Capital Teritory, where all houses built had been ordered for demolition.

"During a demolition exercise by the then FCT Minister, El-Rufai, people were ordered to move to Mpape as it was a safe haven; now that houses have been built there with Certificate of Occupancy, government has ordered d demolition, while also preventing a peaceful protest by the residents with the instrumentality of armed men."

This, he said, was an anti-peace action from the government and should be stopped forthwith.

He noted that anti-people actions could further scuttle the already fading peace in the country, while urging the President to investigate land allocation in Abuja, as well as the National Assembly to beam their searchlight on land matters in the area.

Commenting on the issue of a single term tenure of six years for some political office holders as being proposed in some quarters, Awoyale noted that it would help in reducing the mad rush for second term and save the country from huge sum of money spent on elections every four years.
