Date: 2012-08-06

A Cattle herdsman and six accomplices have been accussed of killing two members of a vigilante group, set thier corpses on fire and then proceeded to burn down the houses of the victims.

Mohammed Dangogo, 30 of Adeogun village via Adera, Kwara State, allegedly conspired with six others to commit the heinous crime.

An Ilorin Magistrate court ordered that the accussed be remanded after he appeared before it on a three-count charge of criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide and mischief.

The accused was arrested following a tip-off at the Area Police station by Seriki Hausawa, the village head of Kosa village via Banni, that the accused and others had killed Dangwama, 60, and Dogo Ruwa, 40.

Police First Information Report (FIR) on the matter stated that investigation conducted at the state criminal investigation department, Ilorin, revealed that the accussed and others simply identified as Tanbaya, Dangi, Chakari, Sheu, Makawa and Babugo criminally conspired and killed the deceased and set the corpses ablaze along with their houses and belongings.

The FIR added that the accused committed the crime based on the fact that the village head established a vigilante group with a view to fishing out men of the underworld among which were the accussed person and others.

Police said the offences committed by the accused contradict section 97, 221 and 337 of penal code of law.

The prosecutor Sergeant Al-Hassan Jubril objected to the bail of the accused person and urged the court to remand him at federal prison custody, Ilorin, pending the outcome of investigation.

He submitted further that the offences for which the accused was brought before the court was capital in nature and not ordinarily bailable. He added that if the accused was granted bail, he might jump bail, knowing the gravity of the alleged offences.

The presiding magistrate, Mrs. I. O. Olawoyin agreed with the submission of the prosecutor and ordered that the accused be remanded at Federal Medium Security Prison, Mandala, Ilorin, pending the outcome of police investigation.

The court adjourned the case till August 15 for further mention.
