Water-borne diseases loom in Afeyin-Olukuta community - Residents
Residents of Afeyin-Olokuta Community in the Ilorin East Local Government area of Kwara state have called on both the local and state governments in the state to come to their rescue and save them from the imminent outbreak of water-born diseases in the area.
Speaking with the Nigerian Tribune when the correspondent visited the community recently, a community leader in the area, Alagba Alli Akano, said the area lacked potable water supply, adding that the borehole provided by the government had long stopped functioning to supply water for the use of the people.
The community leader, who said that the people of the area had resorted to digging well to get water supply, added that they were open to water borne diseases since the source of the water was not treated.
He also lamented that their children and wards went on long journey in search of water as those with dug wells were not many in the agrarian community, while calling on the governments to provide potable water supply for them to ameliorate their sufferings.
Akano also said the people looked up to the new administration in the state to solve their problems having suffered neglect by past administrations in the state.
The community leader, who said the area has only one primary and secondary school, added that the school could no longer accommodate the growing population of pupils in the community, calling on the government to establish more primary and secondary schools in the area.
“We could have embarked on construction of more schools in the area, but we are financially incapacitated. We are poor peasant farmers and we want our children to be educated to provide us better living standard in the nearest future,” he said.
He also said that the access road leading to the community is bad and un-motorable, adding that the school teachers in the area always put sand and stones on dangerous spots to make thems passable especially during rainy season.
